Local Group News Board

Led by Daniel Martin at his teaching school, St Matthew’s CE Primary School, the meeting started with a tour of the school, showing all of its RE displays and the working walls for RE in every classroom.

The Local Group also invited a guest speaker, Christina Brown, who works at St Martin’s Church in the Bullring. Christina spoke about the services offered by St Martin’s and how they could benefit different age groups from primary to sixth form. Some of the things the church offers are heritage school tours, role plays of what a baptism looks like, demos, and discussions about the stained-glass windows and all the different crosses in the church.

The group had all brought samples of work from their own schools, and everyone looked at the different workbooks to see the kind of work each school was doing.

Daniel discussed religion-themed literature and allowed the group to each take one book back with them, so that in the next meeting they can discuss the outcome of the books they took. His recommendations for this came from other teachers. Books included in his recommendations included:

  • Northern Lights
  • The Secret Garden
  • A World of Difference
  • The Tale of the Heaven Tree
  • The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross
  • Animal Tales
  • You are Special

Daniel then discussed useful websites that can be used for RE, including RE:ONLINE, RE Definitions and FreeBibleImages

Next meeting date: TBC

Focus: RE within a knowledge-rich curriculum, the new Ofsted Framework and guest speaker (TBC).

Ideas for your Local Group meeting:

  • Invite a speaker from a place of worship in your local area.
