Year 5 - What impact do people’s beliefs have in their lives? Spiritual expression.

This unit enables pupils to engage with spiritual ideas through the arts as they explore examples of creativity from three different religions. The focus is on engagement with Christian, Muslim and Sikh ideas explored through the arts. There is more work here on Christianity than can be covered, but the sections on Islam and Sikhism are important: these two religions are both prominent in many of our towns and cities.

Year 4 - Values: what matters most? Exploring right and wrong with Christians and Humanists: an RE investigation

This unit enables pupils to identify and investigate values in human life, and think about their own values, with special reference to the values of Christians and Humanists. The unit uses a pedagogy of conceptual development. Teachers should plan to introduce the key concepts of the unit carefully and reinforce their use for learning through all the lessons.

This unit supports the principal aim of RE: The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

Year 2 - What makes some places special? Churches and Synagogues: What can we find out?

The emphasis is on understanding worship through studying Christianity and Judaism. Children may need to keep reviewing the meanings of terms like ‘Jew’ and ‘Christian’ to build up their understanding of what a religious identity means. This unit will help teachers to implement ‘Better RE’ by providing them with well worked examples of teaching and learning about sacred buildings and special places.
