Searching for God

Searching for God
By Beth
Age 12

My picture represents 'Searching for God' because it shows that no matter where you look- in other worlds, cities, towns, countries, oceans - you may never find God. As I think God is more like a state of mind. Like happiness; there are certain things that happen or that you do that make you happy. So, with God, if something good happens to you, you feel that 'God' is rewarding you (e.g. for your actions, faith etc)' However, I feel that if 'God' exists, he is a very cruel thing/person/particle because even in the poorest countries in the world, where they always keep the faith, they are never rewarded. All they get is flood and drought. Yet in places like the United Kingdom we have nearly everything; we are rewarded, but not by God - by parents, family, teachers etc.

In my picture, the yellow-gold ribbon-like lines flowing down my page represent the curtains between different worlds. This means wherever you look, you won't find God. The first world is a city, heavily populated, modem world where there isn't much faith. The second is a more traditional world, with a church, where God's 'presence' is more felt. The middle is just a plain world. The last two worlds are more natural, where there are not many material things, such as gadgets and electricity, where people still keep the faith, but isn't actually there.

The inspiration for my piece came from Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' books, where the characters' mission is to bring an end to the Authority- 'God'. This is because he lied about creating the world, and was no help. The ideas of 'many worlds' also came from Philip Pullman, as in the books it is about parallel universes, which are all very close, yet you cannot access them.
