The Mind Opens Like a Flower
Georgia (13)
St Helier, Jersey

The open lotus flower represents the mind: complex, with petals lying in a series of layers, like the experiences we get through life that form our thoughts, beliefs, actions and choices. The outer petals represent difficulties and evils. Each petal is printed with such a problem: bullying, terrorism, and disaster. I have used columns of print: the newspapers affect our open mindedness.
The green petals represent jealousy and greed, which also blinds our open mind. Purple petals represent bigotry and ignorance: most of us close out minds to new experiences and different beliefs, without even knowing it. The black petals represent anger and hate, emotions that can squash open mindedness, but can sometimes be positive: you can hate prejudice!

The white heart of the flower represents spirituality, honesty, truth and innocence. I made it of tissue, for softness and fragility. The negatives in our lives and minds put huge pressure on our spiritual soul: we must encourage open mindedness and spirituality to grow despite the negative!
