Who is God?

Who is God?
Jessica (13)
Sawston Village College

I am an atheist, but this work shows my ideas of who god could be, and what effect belief in god has on people. I used woven ribbon to represent how all my ideas about god are interwoven.

  • Light blue represents sky: I used to think god was in the sky.
  • Dark blue represents the ocean: we do not know its deepest secrets, like how I do not know whether god really doesn't exist.
  • White represents peace and purity, highly regarded qualities for theists, but also blankness and emptiness-my non-belief.
  • Gold represents how precious god is to some people: I respect that.
  • Red represents the anger and hate often present alongside religious belief. It also represents the fear of going to hell, which can force people to follow a certain religion.
  • Black represents the dark oppression of god.
  • Pink represents how god is supposedly omni-benevolent in love.
  • Purple shows how god is usually portrayed as more important than anything else in life.
  • Green shows that we should sometimes go back to nature for answers, rather than god.
  • Yellow represents the happiness that belief in god can bring.

A piece of twisted wire shows how positive ideas of who god is have been changed and twisted into excuses to hate. The chains show how religion can restrict thinking freely and be used as an excuse for inhibiting rights and freedoms. Braided ribbons at the bottom show how ideas come together in different combinations, creating many different images of god. They're deliberately messy: no idea of who god is can be perfect. The key represents how we do not have the key to the truth of who god really is. The nest represents new life and creation. The tree represents the strength of some people's ideas, and also Darwin's tree of life and theory of evolution, which is one of the main reasons I am an atheist. The world shows religion's global effect and the eye represents how god could be watching: many people are scared of god's omniscience. Finally, the spiral represents how my ideas are always growing and changing. Ask me who I think god is in 5 years. My answer will be different.
