Mystery Stories!
Teacher: This theme was about the stories religions use to explore mysteries. Rather than just drawing a picture from a story, we invited entrants to use any religious or spiritual story ~ ancient or modern ~ and asked: what mystery does this story connect with? Adam and Eve connect with the mystery of creation, Rama and Sita is about the mystery of life and light. The resurrection of Jesus is about the mystery of life beyond the grave. Winners expressed a deep mystery in image and words with real insight of their own, connecting a story and a mystery.
Students: Religious stories often answer big questions or hint at mysteries: what is God like? Where do we come from? What is goodness? Why is there evil? We asked students to choose a religious story, and look for the mystery in the story. We asked students to make their art work bring out the spiritual mystery in the story. Or perhaps take a mystery from a modern story, a spiritual movie or a novel they love that is mysterious: how does love grow? What makes the heart sing? Where do we sense God? Why is life so wonderful? And so painful? Is humanity priceless, or cheap?
