Respect: A Logo for RE
Teacher: This was a theme about community cohesion. Good RE promotes respect, but how? And what does respect actually mean? Teaching children and young people the value of living together doesn’t mean just copying out symbols of 6 religions: instead it focuses on why it is difficult to share one world and what helps us to do it. Small scale respect is often harder than the worldwide principles as well: how to respect my classmates and how to learn open mindedness are a possible focus here. We asked teachers to show pupils some pictures from the NATRE web gallery from 2004 to get them started.
Students: Everybody likes to be respected, but how do you do it? RE is part of school so that you can learn to respect people who believe what you don’t believe. In this theme, we asked pupils to design an exciting logo for RE that shows that in RE all people are respected, even though we are not all the same. We asked them to show the best ideas they have about how people can become more respectful, and link thier work to the teachings of their own religion, or view of life. Why do you think we should respect each other? How? What difference will it make? What experience has helped you to respect the people you have met from different religions?
