Art in Heaven 2018
School Art Club (Key stage 1)
Birch Church England Primary School
A prayer garden for all faiths to share
During our after-school art club for key stage 1 pupils we discussed the theme of ‘Holy Spaces’
We looked at images from Varanasi, Makkah, Bethlehem and Jerusalem as well as the churches in the rock face in Ethiopia and Temples, Mosques and Churches. We also showed images of the natural world including outdoor prayer spaces. These images created lots of discussion amongst the children and we went on to discuss the ideas the ideas the children had on what their ideal Holy space would look like. Between them the children then came up with the idea of creating ‘A Prayer Garden for All Faiths to Share’. As a Church of England School, we regularly look at other faiths and it is quite unusual for us to create work based on the Christian Faith to display in our local churches but this time the children wanted to create a payer space incorporating all religions where they could meet people from different faiths.
