Art in Heaven 2018
Nonsuch High School for Girls
The title I chose was “Pray!” because I wanted to paint a picture asking whether prayer is necessary and if prayers are answered. In my painting, you can see hands covering the girl’s mouth and ear. I hope people will notice the meaning of the hands and why they are there. The hand which is covering the mouth represents that some people consider prayer a waste of time. The hand covering the ear represents that “God can’t hear you” and people who say you are just talking to air. However, the girl in the painting is still praying which shows us that she firmly believes in God and that he can hear you even if it seems to others that there is no one listening.
If you look carefully at the painting, you will see that the hands are covered with black gloves and two different gems, yellow and black. I’ve tried to show my thoughts and feelings about how communities may want others to believe in the same thing they do by force. It may be unclear but the two coloured gems represent the two sides. The girl has a different colour from the other gloves to show she will remain strong and believing what she feels is right.
This work has helped me understand that no matter what others tell you to do or believe in, you have the freedom and choice to say what you think is right.
