NATRE Speak at Oral Education Select committee hearing on Recruitment and retention
NATRE were pleased to be invited to speak directly to Education select committee about the consequences of lack of training for teachers of RE and secondary specialist shortages.
Following the submission of written evidence to the Education Select Committee inquiry into recruitment, retention and training of teachers, NATRE, alongside four other subject teacher associations was invited to be part of a panel to give oral evidence in the House of Commons in Westminster on Tuesday, 12th September. NATRE were pleased that RE was formally described as a shortage subject by the cross party committee, which described the session as follows:
The Education Committee questions experts on how to address the shortage of specialist teachers in subjects including maths, sciences, languages, religious education and DT.
The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) publishes an annual report on the teacher labour market. For 2022/23 it found there had been “historically low recruitment” in both primary and secondary schools.
An open letter has been signed by parliamentarians, RE organisations and others this week and sent to the Secretary of State; Gillian Keegan MP, calling for more support for RE. The letter was reported in The Telegraph
