Year 3 - How is faith expressed in Hindu community and tradition?
This unit supports the principal aim of RE: The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

This unit of work is intended to enable pupils to understand the significance of the five Pillars of Islam, and to reflect on the sources of strength in their own lives. Many Muslim pupils will know a lot about Five Pillars from their own faith community, but the intentions here are to provide space for depth of thinking and developing understanding.

This unit enables pupils to identify and investigate values in human life, and think about their own values, with special reference to the values of Christians and Humanists. The unit uses a pedagogy of conceptual development. Teachers should plan to introduce the key concepts of the unit carefully and reinforce their use for learning through all the lessons.

This unit enables pupils to engage with spiritual ideas through the arts as they explore examples of creativity from three different religions. The focus is on engagement with Christian, Muslim and Sikh ideas explored through the arts. There is more work here on Christianity than can be covered, but the sections on Islam and Sikhism are important: these two religions are both prominent in many of our towns and cities.

This is a special and original unit of RE and can be used for all pupils at any point in the age range 7-11, though probably best meets learning needs in Year 5 or 6. It provides for breadth and balance, and reference to all of the six principal religions in the UK, alongside the studies in depth of individual religions that schools will be providing at key stage two.
