Religion News Service

Religion News Service is a news service that has been a source of news about religion, ethics, spirituality and moral issues for more than 70 years. Based in Washington, D.C., RNS has a network of correspondents around the world, providing news and information on all faiths and religious movements to the nation’s leading newspapers, news magazines, broadcast organisations and religious publications.

Classroom suggestions:

a) Ask students to access three comments on a topic that is most relevant to either (I) a topic about which they know something already or (ii) a new area of study. They should analyse the content for:

i) the main elements of the story;
ii) how the story is presented;
iii) the extent to which the story is treated positively or negatively;
iv) the religions that are represented.

b) The Religion News Service states on its home page that it is ‘The only secular news and photo service devoted to unbiased coverage of religion and ethics - exclusively.’ To what extent do students agree or disagree with this statement, and what evidence can they provide?
